Wainui-Okitu Residents & Ratepayers Association Inc

Some of the process and outcomes ( from GDC perspective), as to why this group is needed.

GDC Viewpoint

Things people would like to see happen

Sustainable development with due regard to maintaining a healthy environment - not to dissimilar to the status quo.

A retention of Wainui's characteristics without any appreciable developments to hinder its charm. Reticulation at a reasonable cost subsidised by the town as we subsidise the town.

Personally - I would like to see Wainui remaina family orientated community with NO high rises

Not change zoning from rural residential up Lysnar & associated streets (re Kate Fraser subdivison) Don't need reticulation.

Suggest investigate ways that would draw neighbourhoods together around issues of common concern and see how these might be addressed.

Keep the communication going, proactive with GDC and others - DOC

Monitor issues relating to quality of life of Wainui/Okitu residents, including specific community safety (neighbourhood watch), cultural activities, marine protection - work with local iwi. Encourage younger generation to participate - i.e. let them have a voice. Inform community re civil defence plans

Assoc to actively initiate: community group actively strengthening sand dunes etc by planting working bees, growing seedlings to plant. Appropriate beach-social events. Wainui community 10 year plan. Referee point for GDC to contact to seek Assn's views on issues. Actively encourage community submissions to GDC on key issues of concern to Assn members, facilitate and support people to prepare and speak to submissions.

Community functions using St Nicholas Hall or the School Hall to meet new residents, to celebrate special milestone etc, to raise funds for local organisations. It would be great to reform the group we had at St Nicholas years ago for arts and crafts and children's after school activities like painting.

Guard against commercialism

We like Wainui to way it is now - this is why we live here. Given tha change is inevitable, we agree that there should be a collective voice to liaise with Council and other relevant parties on issues that may adversely impact on the unique nature of our community - particularly with respect to planning and development issue.

That residents can have an identity and respect from Council and in so doing maintain a community, which identifies with rich ecological wellbeing that is not based on dogma and pure scientific opinion. That Wainui can be a leading example to the rest of the country of a coastal community working in harmony with all elements, bearing in mind that the narrowstrip of coastal frontage does not have lagoons and wetlands, which soften impact of water from the hinterland and the effect therefore, that this has on the foreshore. Drainage must reflect the contours of the natural energy found in water. To maintain and develop ordered development which is free of commercial domination. To instigate a community waste system, if required that is sustainable ecologically, financially and socially. To instigate a biological program of foreshore and dune rehabilitation using plantings and compost tea preparations. Any beach protection should be from natutal product and have paramagnetic properties such as limestone rocks (Calcium) with sand (silica) with natural vegetation to comply with visual requirements.

future plans

Would like to see power cables go underground. Non pollution of Okitu stream.

Bike Path! Zoning change awareness for community

At present perfectly happy with the way things are

Lobby the Council to recognise the unique character of the area and to put in place statutory (for example permitted activity standards that promote alternative stormwater treatment) and non statutory provisions (for example, a comprehensive subdivision design guide) that protect and enhance that character. Ref. Character study by Landscape Architect Sue Dick commissioned by the Council in 2008.

Fundraising for special projects - my one is the pines playground

I am very concerned about the dangers posed by trucks to all members of the community, but in particular surfers At Makorori, school children waiting for buses and people who bike to and from town. Amongst other things I believe that the speed limits are too high and the road too narrow in places. The fully laden trucks speeding up at the bottom of the Okitu Headland Makorori side within metres of cars parked manoeuvring has the markings of a disaster I hope we will never see.

Cycle lanes

I would like to see a footpath along Lysnar Street especially at the bend

Help Wainui keep its sleepy seaside character & charm it currently contains. i.e. development to a minimum. Keep rates down. Help get logging trucks, vehicles to slow down on Main Highway as pass through area. (Pouawa, Makorori, Okitu and Wainui. Promote surfing and sea sports available to the area. i.e. snorkling in the Pouawa Marine reserve.

Skate Park for kids. Tree planting. Community Newsletter (could be on line) Dune & Bid species protection. Sustainable Power -solar, wind initiatives. Electric fueling station for electric cars. Cleaner culverts. Community Market

That Wainui/Okitu residents/owners have a say in GDC plans for our community from the point before any plans begin to be developed

Assessment of current septic systems to avoid soil/water contamination.

Responses on it's Objectives

To keep a tight rein over GDC agendas regarding development Wainui/Okitu

Keep the distinctive character of Wainui. Speak on behalf of community members that are subscribors. Assist in the planned development of th area.

That Wainui residents have a collective voice that is powerful enough requiring to be heard on issues that affect Wainui.

All appears covered

To represent majority of views of our community. To support achieve and promote such changes and improvement to the quality of life for local residents. Regular consultation (which is done already in a very non invasive way. To be non political. Promote community spirit. Promote health & education by way of working towards things such cycle/walking tracks. To protect, enhance and maintain unique

To keep Council in check. Protection of Wainui/Okitu i.e. over development. Give us a voice.

.Community "Band" of voluntary support e.g. I donate 5 hours gardening to help to someone. This shows "credit" in the community bank which I came used by asking "bank coordinator" to match my need for 5 hours help for something I don't have the skills to do e.g. carpentry maintenance

We don't want to become another Surfer Paradise as in Australia

Listed objectives seem appropriate to us

To have an united front to ensure our present enviroment is preserved

To maintain the true presence of this community for all who live and visit there. That Wainui can be a leading example to the rest of the country of a coastal community working in harmony with all elements.

Open forum for communication as it relates to Wainui issues.

To continue to keep the GDC and other official bodies honest and transparent in future plans regarding development of the coastal communities and surrounding areas.
